I'd like to thank all those who have responded on the New Groups, in particular International Dining Group (4), 5 Mile Walkers (2), and Stroll to Lunch (2).  It's great to see your enthusiasm.  It may take ma a little time to get back to everyone, but pleased be assured I am on it.  International Dining (4) can fly because we have two leaders!  I will be in touch with everyone shortly.  I will then come to the 5 Mile Walkers and Stroll to Lunch.

    Hi there

    I hope you're well.

Just to introduce myself, I’m Julia and I work at an organisation called Everyday Plastic. We run campaigns to raise awareness about the single-use plastic problem, and aim to inspire people to reduce their own plastic consumption.

This March, we're teaming up with Greenpeace UK to run The Big Plastic Count, the UK’s largest investigation into household plastic waste. Our goal is to highlight the urgency and scale of the plastic problem, and empower individuals to play a part in helping solve the plastic crisis.

The Big Plastic Count brief is really simple: count your plastic waste for one week (from 11-17 March) and submit your results to us online. This will automatically generate your personalised household plastic footprint and will help us to reveal how much plastic we are throwing away as a nation, and what really happens to it afterwards. We'll use the results to convince UK ministers to lead the way at global talks that could finally phase out plastic pollution for good.

Over 60,000 people across the UK have already signed up, but the more people we have taking part, the more powerful our collective voice will become.

We would love for the members of the Cookridge & Horsforth U3A to join us on our mission, and would be extremely grateful if you would be willing to help us achieve that by sharing on the registration link with your group members: thebigplasticcount.com/U3A

We also have additional information especially for community groups, as well as images and graphics to share with your wider network and community (e.g. on social media or in an email newsletter). You can download those at the following link: TBPC assets

If you have any questions, or would like more info, please do get in touch and I’ll be happy to help you.

Thanks for your support. Let’s get counting!

    Best wishes,

    Julia

'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple,
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves,
And satin sandals,  and say we’ve no money for butter.'
    (Jenny Joseph)

Please join in the spirit of this event by dressing appropriately. There will be prizes for appropriate attire, male and female,

    and a hat parade.

(Now is the time to check out the charity shops!)

    Other entertainment is planned.

Are members aware of the Online Learning Events provided by the Third Age Trust via Zoom?  I have just participated in my first session of Laughter Yoga.  It lasted 35 minutes and was great fun.  I sat for all the session but there’s still plenty of movement involved.  Give it a try - you have to book a free ticket..  Look on the National U3A website or in Sam Maugher's National newsletter for information about all the events on offer.  I’ll be laughing again next month after I've joined a session which is going to help me understand How the Human Brain Works at the end of this month.

We are planning a visit to 18th century Tatton Park on 29th August. The visit will include an optional guided tour of the Old Hall (approximately 2 hours) and free time to wander round the estate and Mansion, and also get lunch. The coach and entry to the house and grounds will be £30.00, or to include the tour £35.00.

'If Tatton Park is a jewel in the crown of Cheshire, then the medieval Old Hall is its hidden gem.

Standing within its own grounds in a quiet wooded area of the park, the medieval Old Hall has a special atmosphere. A site of historical and archaeological importance within the Northwest of England, it takes visitors on an evocative journey through its 500 year history as a dwelling place - from medieval manor house to Victorian Gamekeepers cottage.'

Details for booking will be available in April.
